Expeditions from abroad also have to pay a peak royalty or fees to climb a peak. The amount of peak royalty depends upon the peak height. A Liaison Officer is assigned to each expedition. The best season for mountaineering in India is from April till October. In some areas like Garhwal and Kullu valley, monsoon months of July and August should also avoided due to heavy rainfall and landslides.

Trekking in India can be undertaken at the vast stretch of the foothills of the Himalayas in Garhwal and Kumaon regions of Uttaranchal, Chamba and Manali in Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Zanskar in Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim and West Bengal. Trekking in India has wide options from a modest leisurely trek in the foothills to more challenging high elevation treks. A normal trekking day starts begins early in the morning. After an early breakfast, tents are dismantled and carried by the porters. The next site for camp halt is generally after a good trek till mid afternoon. A short halt for lunch is taken in between.
