Travel back in time on tours to Jodhpur, to see the grandeur and beauty of an ancient desert city. Jodhpur, also called the 'Blue City', came into existence because of the marriage alliance between Rathore Siahji and the sister of a local prince. Rathores became influential and powerful and found Mandore inadequate for themselves. Thus, Roa Jodha, the chief of the Rathore clan founded the new city in 1459 AD and called it Jodhpur.
The Rathore Rajputs established Mehrangarh Fort in the 15th century AD when they founded their capital at Jodhpur. Built over the buff-colored sandstone hill, Mehrangarh Fort is approached by seven gateways. The fort is invincible, as enemies could not attack it easily. The palatial apartments within the fort are strong ad sturdy standing for more than five centuries. Today the fort serves as a museum managed by the Royal Trust. Visit the Moti Mahal, Janaki Mahal, Chanda Mahal, Darbar Takhat, Sheesh Mahal, Phool Mahal, Umaid Vilas and Maan Vilas on tours to Jodhpur.
Relish the elegance and sobriety of Umaid Bhawan Palace on tours to Jodhpur. Built of marble and pink sandstone in 1929 AD, the palace was designed by The British Royal Institute of Architects. Maharaja Umaid Singh built it as his royal residence but he did not live long to live in this fascinating palace. The palace is also known as the Chhittar Palace because local Chittar sandstone was used to build it. The present Maharaja Gaj Singh II lives in a part of the building while the rest has been converted into a hotel.
The Jaswant Thada is midway on the climb up to the fort. The place is the traditional cremation ground of the rulers of Jodhpur. Built in 1899 Ad, the cenotaph of Jaswant Singh II is most amazing. The memorial is beautified with ornamental gardens and chattris made of white marble. The cenotaphs of other rulers are simple in comparison to the memorial of Jaswant Singh II.
