Spread over an area of 430 sq km, Kaziranga National Park lies on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River in Assam. The park is surrounded by hills of Barail and Karbi Anglong. The plans to extend the boundaries of the park to include the Brahmaputra River in the north and a part of the Mikir hill ranges in the south are in the pipeline. Kaziranga was declared a reserve forest way back in 1908 AD and was officially closed for shooting. It was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1950 and a national park by 1974.
Go on tours to Kaziranga National Park to witness the single horned Indian rhinos or Rhinoceros Unicornis. The park had only a few dozen rhinos when the area first became a reserve. But now it has a population of more than thousand of them. Although the rhinos are still endangered yet they are well protected over here. It is hard to miss a rhino or two on tours to Kaziranga. In the ear 1985, the park entered the list of the World Heritage Sites.
Besides the rhinos, you may also spot Capped Langurs, Elephants, Hog Badgers, Hoolock Gibbons, Indian Bison, Jackals, Jungle Cats, Leopard Cats, Porcupines, Pythons, Sloth Bears, Swamp Deer, Sambhars, Hog Deer, Tigers, Wild Buffaloes and Wild Pigs on tours to Kaziranga. The park also has the avian population, which is on increase during the winter because of the migratory birds.
Plan your tours to Kaziranga between November and April. The park is closed from April to September because of the monsoon season.
